ORPHANAGES

Like millions of others across Vietnam, they are living in orphanages with little hope for the future. The tragedy is that in many cases their parents have died from diseases that are not fatal in Western societies. These children are the innocent victims of AIDS, and of social and financial inequalities felt the world over. They may have emotional disabilities, developmental delays, behavioural handicaps and/or medical concerns.

To those in the West, an orphanage can seem a sad place, but for some Vietnamese children, an orphanage provides a refuge from the harsh conditions of the street. It is a place where they can laugh, learn, and grow — an opportunity to experience the childhood they never really had before they entered the orphanage. The Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres in Danang diocese offer the education, compassion, and friendship these children lacked while living on the streets. We look after children who have been abused or neglected or who are in need of foster placement.

The Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres in Danang believe that by helping the parents we ensure that they can care and provide for their children so that there will be fewer abandoned or orphaned children in the future. For this reason we have expanded our work to encompass communities and families. We continue to play an active roll in the orphanages themselves in order to improve the conditions of the orphanages and the lives of the children living in them.
