4. Summary : What Is Cerebral Palsy? Cerebral palsy is a disorder that affects motor skills (the ability to move in a coordinated and purposeful way), muscle tone, and muscle movement. Under normal circumstances, people learn to move their muscles in a coordinated and smooth way, although simple motions, even standing still, require a complicated interaction of muscles and nerves. Because a child who has cerebral palsy has difficulty controlling or coordinating his muscles, even these simple movements are difficult. Other problems children with cerebral palsy may develop include eating difficulties, bladder and bowel control problems, breathing problems, and learning disabilities. Cerebral palsy results from damage to the brain that occurs before, during, or after birth in the first 3 to 5 years of life. It is not contagious and is not a progressive condition, which means it does not get worse over time.
There are three types of cerebral palsy – spastic cerebral palsy causes stiffness and movement difficulties, athetoid cerebral palsy leads to involuntary and uncontrolled movements, and ataxic cerebral palsy is characterised by a disturbed sense of balance and depth perception. Children with cerebral palsy have varying degrees of physical disability and may also have associated medical problems such as seizures, speech or communication problems, and mental retardation. The ultimate disability level of people with cerebral palsy will be strongly affected by the presence and degree of mental retardation. Although there is presently no cure for cerebral palsy, the condition can be managed with a variety of therapies to help the child achieve maximum potential in growth and development. As soon as cerebral palsy is diagnosed, a child can begin therapy for movement, learning, speech, hearing, and social and emotional development. In addition, medication, surgery, and braces may also be used to help the child attain as much muscle function as possible. The team of professionals who may work with a child with cerebral palsy include physicians, therapists, psychologists, educators, nurses, and social workers. The support of a child’s family also plays an important role in the management of the condition. What type of therapy is available for CP?
Children with CP often undergo different kinds of therapy to help them improve their motor skills for activities such as walking, talking and using their hands. Some children receive therapy at school and some attend a special clinic to see therapists. Therapists are special teachers who are trained to work with people on learning better or easier ways to do things. Just like a coach who helps you learn and practice new skills to make you a better footballer or basketball player, therapists "coach" people to help them learn and practice new skills. Physical Therapy
Physiotherapists help children learn better ways to move and balance. They may help children with CP learn to walk, use their wheelchair, stand by themselves, or go up and down stairs safely. Kids may also work on fun skills in physiotherapy like running, kicking and throwing a ball, or learning to ride a bike. Physiotherapy is usually called "PT" for short. Speech and Language Therapy Speech therapists work with children on communication skills. Communication skills may mean talking, using sign language, or using a communication aid. Children who are able to talk may work with a speech therapist on making their speech clearer (easier to understand) or on building their language skills by learning new words, learning to speak in sentences, or improving their listening skills. Children who are not able to talk because of their difficulty controlling the muscles needed for speech may learn sign language or use some kind of communication aid. A communication aid might be a book or poster with pictures that show things the person might want, or an alphabet board that the person can use to spell out their message. There are also computers that are used as communication aids that actually talk for the person. Occupational Therapy
Occupational therapists usually work with children on better ways to use their arms, hands, and upper body. They may teach children better or easier ways to write, draw, cut with scissors, brush their teeth, dress and feed themselves, or control their wheelchair. Occupational therapists also help children find the right special equipment to make some everyday jobs a little easier. Recreational Therapy
Recreational therapists help kids with CP have fun. They work with children on sports skills or other leisure activities. In recreational therapy kids may work on dance, swimming or horse riding. They may also work on art or horticulture (growing and taking care of plants) or almost any other hobby they are interested in. What CP children in our school need? Most in need are professionals because there are only two physiotherapists at Thanh Tam Special School for 24 CP children. The main aim of this project is to seek the funding to take on more therapists. The average of income for a therapist in Danang is USD 120 per month. The period covered by this project is a minimum of three years. The total amount needed for the project is USD 4,320.- 5.Budget: The full cost of three year salary for one therapist is USD 4,320.- Your donation would be sincerely appreciated and help to ensure early intervention for hearing impaired children.
