4. Brief statement of the problem to be addressed:

Although there is presently no cure for Cerebral Palsy (CP), the condition can be managed with a variety of therapies to help a child achieve maximum potential in growth and development. As soon as cerebral palsy is diagnosed, a child can begin therapy for movement, learning, speech, hearing, social and emotional development. In addition, medication, surgery, and braces may also be used to help the child attain as much muscle function as possible. The team of professionals, who may work with a child with cerebral palsy, include: physicians, therapists, psychologists, educators, nurses, and social workers. The support of a child’s family also plays an important role in the management of the condition.

Determining and meeting the needs of children suffering with CP is of crucial importance in order for the therapists and specialists to provide the best care possible. Our occupational team is made up therapists who work in close cooperation with the teachers. Very quickly, after the entry of the child in the special school of ThanhTam, our therapists meet with the coordinator of rehabilitation and the doctor in order to establish a therapy program, as well as the frequencies of the treatments. A child with CP in our school receives minimum two hours of therapy every day. Our therapists work as a team, supplementing the work of the others in order in order to meet the needs of the children. However, despite the work of the exsisting teams, more proffessionals are sorely needed as there are only two physiotherapists at Thanh Tam Special School for 24 CP children.

7. Antecedents of the project:

The single resource of the special school Thanh Tam comes from the convent of the sisters of St Paul of Chartres of the town of Danang, which is unable to cover the costs.

8- Goals and objectives:

Reopened in September 1989, together with a nursery school, Anh Duong Special School Thanh Tam is a children's health, educational, and residential treatment agency. This facility helps to manage the day-to-day needs of abused, cognitively challenged and/or emotionally disturbed children on the road to recovery by connecting them to important health, psychological, psychiatric, educational, medical and financial support. Attempts were made to present a program of education, training and nutrition in the special school of Thanh Tam. This represents a part of our strategy, to promote an establishment which would allow all the children and teenagers, whatever their kind, age, capacities, deficiencies, religion or ethnic membership, of being able to take part and find their place in their community.

The main goal of this project is therefore to seek the funding to train more therapists to fill the serious gap in personel at this establishment. All of the sisters who participate in the training will be back to Thanh Tam Special School to serve disabled children for the long term.

11. Budget:

The average of a training course for a therapist in Danang is 25 EUR per month. The period of this project is a minimum of two years.
